Cyclists will roll through Sisters in big numbers
Sisters sees a whole lot of folks on two wheels on an average day in the summertime. But this week, the numbers are going to increase a whole lot, with two major events sending cyclists through Sisters.

Easy hike along the Lower Metolius
While waiting for the local high country to open up after our big snow year, I did a bit of trail wandering in more accessible areas. Exploring this part of the Lower Metolius River is hardly a challenging adventure; but, if you haven't visited this stretch of the river, it's worth your time to see where our iconic and scenic local waterway morphs into a truly big and powerful river.

Kayaking a temporary lake
In the never-ending quest to enjoy outdoor activities while waiting for the snowed-in high country to open up, an email from a friend prompted this little adventure. The email contained three photos of Fish Lake, a peculiar body of water near Clear Lake that doesn't even exist for part of the year. It was time to break out the kayaks.

Dozens of golfers smeared on the sunscreen and hit the green grass of Aspen Lakes on the hottest day of the year to date last Sunday, in the 20th annual Outlaw Open.

Sisters youth is a rodeo star
Sisters saw a whole lot of top cowboys and cowgirls come through town for the Sisters Rodeo last weekend. Later this month, Sisters' own rodeo star, Adriene Steffen, will leave town for Lebanon, Tennessee, where she will compete in the NJHFR (National Junior High Finals Rodeo) in barrel racing and breakaway roping.

Steffen, a sixth-grader at Sisters Middle School, qualified for national competition as the top barrel racer in Oregon in junior high school rodeo.

The Gurney brothers have been stand-out athletes for the Outlaws for the past several years and will take their skills, talents, and abilities to the next level. On June 6 twins Jacob and Jonny signed an official letter of intent to play football for George Fox University.

New volleyball coach is in for the long haul
Rory Rush was recently hired as the new Sisters High School head volleyball coach. She told The Nugget she plans to stick around for the long haul. Rush is the fourth coach the varsity squad has had in the past four years.

Running commentary
Eugene, Oregon hosted the most high-caliber track and field meet in America last week as world-class athletes jumped, threw, and ran world-leading marks at the annual Prefontaine Classic, a Diamond Level meet that honors Oregon's own Steve Prefontaine, considered one of the finest American distance runners of all time, who died in a car accident in 1975 at the peak of his career.

Outlaw signs to play baseball - and music - at DSU
Alec Gannon, four-year varsity starter for the Outlaws baseball team, recently signed with Dakota State University, and will play for the Trojans next year.

Alec is versatile, and has played every position on the field except for catcher and first base. His main position has always been second base, but when the Outlaws needed speed in the outfield, Gannon was there. Alec was a second-team all-league selection and finished with a .356 batting average this year for the Outlaws.

Ryan Funk is a topnotch catcher
Ryan Funk has had baseball in his blood from the time he joined T-ball as a three-year-old. His baseball dream of playing at the collegiate level came true this year, as he signed to play for Lower Columbia Community College (LCCC) in Longview, Washington. He'll trade in his black-and-white Outlaws colors for red and blue.

Outlaws fall in 4A quarterfinals
Sisters didn't get the results they were hoping for in their home game against Philomath in the 4A quarterfinals on Friday, May 26. The Outlaws rallied in the fifth to go up 5-4, but the Warriors battled back and scored the game-winning run on a walk in the eighth inning. The loss knocked the Outlaws out of the playoffs.

Philomath jumped out quick and scored three runs in the first, and tacked on another run in the second to take an early lead. The Warriors held the Outlaws scoreless the first four innings.
